Combined both systems described by Frostburn and me (Ganaram); organized existing sections into mos descendant naming, names for mosses by family, and individual names; Greek-ified wood names and extended up to 12; wasn't sure if "p-chro smitonic" was referring to a family or a single mos; stuff may be out-of-order or broken so feel free to edit if so

This is a systematic extension for the TAMNAMS MOS scale naming system based on relationships of a named mos (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc). It's intended for a user interface so that every MOS pattern has a memorable name. There's also a more euphonic version at least for User:Frostburn's taste.

Naming mos descendants

To name mosses that have more than 10 notes, names are based on how they're related to a parent mos. This section is currently work-in-progress and currently describes two systems devised by Frostburn and Ganaram inukshuk.

Proposals Child (1st descendant) Grandchild (2nd descendant) Great-grandchild (3rd descendant) (k-1 greats) grandchild (kth descendant) Other notes
Frostburn's proposal m-chro (parent's name) f-enhar (grandparent's name) uso-(great-grandparent's name)
paso-(great-grandparent's name)
m-enhar (grandparent's name) quso-(great-grandparent's name)
miso-(great-grandparent's name)
p-chro mos (parent's name) p-enhar (grandparent's name) miha-(great-grandparent's name)
quha-(great-grandparent's name)
s-enhar (grandparent's name) paha-(great-grandparent's name)
uha-(great-grandparent's name)
Ganaram's proposal s-chromatic mos s-enharmonic mos us-subchromatic mos kth-descendant mos Prefixes are optional.

Names are still work-in-progress.

Secondarily, descendant mosses are named based on what step ratio the parent has relative to the descendant. This is added as a prefix, and most of these prefixes are based on TAMNAMS step ratio ranges.

Wood scales

Trivial multi-MOS scales of k periods (mosses of the form kL ks) are named k-wood. If k is greater than 5 and no greater than 12, these can be written out as (Greek numeral prefix)wood, as shown in the table below.

Mos Name Prefix Abbrev.
6L 6s hexawood hexwd- hxw
7L 7s heptawood hepwd- hpw
8L 8s octawood octwd- ocw
9L 9s enneawood ennwd- enw
10L 10s decawood decwd- dkw
11L 11s hendecawood hedwd- hdw
12L 12s dodecawood dodwd- ddw
13L 13s 13-wood 13wd- 13w
14L 14s 14-wood 14wd- 14w
etc...

Diatonic family

This system introduces the following names for (grand)daughters of diatonic 5L 2s.

Diatonic family tree
Daughters
Pattern Name Notes
5L 7s p-chromatic Chromatic scale from pythagorean generator 3/2. S-chromatic is an alternative name.
7L 5s m-chromatic Chromatic scale of meantone. F-chromatic is an alternative name.
Granddaughters
Pattern Name Notes
12L 5s p-enharmonic Enharmonic scale from 3/2 generator.
5L 12s s-enharmonic Enharmonic scale of superpyth.
12L 7s m-enharmonic Enharmonic scale of meantone.
7L 12s f-enharmonic Enharmonic scale of flattone.
Great-granddaughters
Pattern Name Notes
12L 17s pythagotonic Generator is 3/2. Small step is the Pythagorean comma
17L 12s gothitonic Generator falls in the neo-gothic range.
19L 12s fauxarabian One possible generator is double of neutral third 11/9 while the scale still sounds neutral
12L 19s fauxrussian Faux-cyrilic font is the "opposite" of faux-arabic
17L 5s protofractalic Daughter scales exhibit fractal-like acoustic effects
5L 17s reinhardic Possible generator 50/33 is similar to 5edo's fifth (Reinhard notation)
19L 7s velic Possible generator 112/75 is called the marvelous fifth
7L 19s siskoic Play on words: Veli means brother in Finnish and sisko means sister.
Great-great-granddaughters
Pattern Name Notes
12L 29s pythamystonic Generator is 3/2. Large step is mystery comma. Small step is pythagorean comma.
29L 12s antipythamystonic
12L 31s fauxmuscovian Parent is fauxrussian. Muscovy is a sub region of Russia.
31L 12s fauxsiberian Parent is fauxrussian. Siberia is a sub region of Russia.
19L 31s fauxsaudi Parent is fauxarabian. Saudis live in a sub region of Arabia.

41L 12s pythomerc Generator is 3/2. Transitional scale between ones dominated by pythagorean and mercator commas.

Other mos names

P-chro smitonic

This system retains the old prefix klei- for 4L 7s (from the kleismic family of temperaments).

Trollic

Trollic is a name given to 12L 1s by Godtone, but in order to troll even further the name is given to 13L 1s instead.

Liesic

The scheme would run out of names at 17-notes so liesic is a name given to 2L 15s based on liese temperament to patch one more hole.

Giedraitic

Giedraitic is a name given to 19L 3s in honor of the basic magic layout of Kite Giedraitis' guitar. The prefix/stem kai comes from Kite's first name /kaɪt/ with the last /t/ removed. The anti-giedratic MOS is given the name zheligowskic in reference to Lucjan Żeligowski leading fights against the town of Giedraičiai.

Hendecoid

Hendecoid is a name given to 11L 2s by Eliora from Greek "eleven", referencing how "its generator is so close to 11/8 as to be called nothing but that", as well as the number of long steps, meaning that overall there's a very strong connection between the number 11 and the mos.

Escapist

Escapist is a name given to 21L 1s by Eliora, referencing the escapade temperament, which is supported by both 21edo and 22edo, covering the entire range.

Quartismoid

Quartismoid is a name given to 22L 1s by Eliora, derived from the fact that five generators of roughly 33/32 quartertone are equal to 7/6 in the harmonic entropy minimum, and also that the extreme ranges of 22edo and 23edo both support this kind of scale.

Table of MOS scales up to 22 notes
