Added special "Responsive" mode to default Vector skin

To make the default "Vector" skin more responsive, I enabled a special setting. This leaves everything the same on Desktop, but makes "Desktop mode" on mobile look somewhat nicer. I couldn't find any issues with it, but if it does, post here and I'll revert. I'll leave this for a while and then move to finished if nobody notices anything wrong with i. Mike Battaglia (talk) 18:08, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Some people might prefer non–responsive skins so that the pages appear like in desktop. You should make it an optional setting, like you did with Selected just intervals by error. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 18:22, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
Right now the mobile skin is left alone - it's still MinervaNeue. Vector currently has responsive mode on. You may be misunderstanding "responsive" - the desktop mode should look exactly the same. But if you go on a mobile phone, but choose "Desktop mode" on the mobile phone (at the bottom of the page), you will get the nicely scaled responsive version of Vector. Basically, everything should be left exactly alone, except for "Desktop mode" on mobile. Have you seen any other differences that break things? If so, please let me know and I'll revert it. Mike Battaglia (talk) 18:33, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
"differences that break things" is subjective. There may as well be someone who hates anything that differs in mobile. In my opinion it's confusing design if the user chose every "desktop mode" it can and it still differs. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 18:38, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
Desktop mode was almost completely broken for me on mobile before, and with this setting, it works. I need some working desktop mode because MinervaNeue doesn't let me do everything. Do you have any concrete examples of something that is broken now? 18:45, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
You're making my brain crash with all these subjective brokens and nicers. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 19:03, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

A setting completely changes Special:RecentChanges

By default, Special:RecentChanges only has a few edits. Yet, when Show bots is enabled, everything becomes visible. What happened? PiotrGrochowski (talk) 05:31, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

We're trying to correct this right now, in fact... Not sure yet. Mike Battaglia (talk) 05:59, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
dev:special:recentchanges is even weirder, with it disabled showing many "imported" edits and many regular edits eaten, and it enabled showing all the regular edits while hiding the "imported" ones. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 06:06, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
RecentChanges are back! 07:17, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
It's some issue with rebuildrecentchanges.php script. Workaround is just to not use that unless we're importing. Moving to done Mike Battaglia (talk) 04:55, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

ReplaceText blasts away the recent changes

Uhhhh... yeah. Oops. If we use this again, probably better to have it not add the changes to the recent log. We now have like 250 ReplaceText entries from me trying to make the Talk archives clearer. Sorry about that -- you can still see changes from before this if you scroll down. Yikes... Mike Battaglia (talk) 07:03, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
FWIW, you can see the RecentChanges if you set it to show the last 500: [1] Mike Battaglia (talk) 07:05, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Maybe you can run ReplaceText as a bot user? It's really easy to hide bot changes when looking at Special:RecentChanges. I think they are hidden by default. Tyler (talk) 13:24, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Map

What's up with "Map"? Spt3125 (talk) 02:09, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
A placeholder article that happened to emphasize on showing what links to it. Redirects to special pages do not have reversing links, so a depressed person can have their talk page say
#REDIRECT [[Special:BlankPage]]
. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 04:28, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Piotr: I think the page on Mappings you are looking for already exists, it's here: Mappings Mike Battaglia (talk) 06:25, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
I created a redirect from Map -> Mappings, since this is what I think was intended... Moving this back to "Done" Mike Battaglia (talk) 06:33, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Flawed Languages links

In the Deutsch version https://de.xen.wiki/w/Willkommen, the left Languages links link to websites that are out of tune. PiotrGrochowski (talk)
The English link is slightly out of tune, linking to Home instead of the actual Main Page. The Xenharmonicの世界へ 日本語 link is very out of tune, being a broken link. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 18:58, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Working now - Mike Battaglia (talk) 22:32, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
The "Xenharmonicの世界へ 日本語" link is still very out of tune, being a broken link. The Español links are weird: they link to pages in en.xen.wiki, while es.xen.wiki has no Languages links. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 04:36, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
Huh? The Japanese link on the German wiki works for me, it goes to [2]. Maybe it reloaded in the background and hasn't changed for you yet? Sometimes caching issues can lead to your browser (or the site) displaying an older version of a page. Mike Battaglia (talk) 13:50, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
It works because you fixed it! PiotrGrochowski (talk) 16:43, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Add Favicon

We want The Xen to appear in browser tabs. I converted our current logo into a .ico file and uploaded it at File:Favicon.ico. According to the instructions I found it needs to either be copied to the site's root (and renamed lowercase), or linked to in some php settings file. Xenjacob (talk) 00:27, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
I may be a little late here, but check this out: https://realfavicongenerator.net/ Tyler (talk) 03:09, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
We'll need to find somewhere to put this - should probably put both the logo and favicon in a sitewide "resources" folder or something, instead of having to upload them as images to each wiki individually. This is going to take some time to do... Mike Battaglia (talk) 18:35, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
If we keep the current convention of uploading them as files, we can mark them as "protected" to prevent accidentally modifying or deleting them. We would continue to take advantage of the existing cache rules, licensing features, etc. The path that it saves them to disk is part of a hash of the filename, so it will stay the same. Tyler (talk) 02:10, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Done - moving to finished Mike Battaglia (talk) 06:14, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Link system for other languages

On mobile devices, there is a "Language" icon on each page - apparently like in Wikipedia. Clicking it currently results only in a message that this page isn't available in other languages - even if content would exist, in German, Spanish or Japanese. It would sure make sense to bring this button to work! And also the analogous functionality on a desktop PC where wikipedia shows for each page the available other-language versions of it in the the side bar. (hstraub) (talk)
Agreed - this is only like this because some of the other languages are actually in this wiki (Japanese and half of Spanish), so they're going to have to be split off first. But if you change the links from, for example, [[:de:Wilkommen]] to [[de:Wilkommen]], they will become language links and appear in the sidebar. (And also disappear as normal links) Mike Battaglia (talk) 11:18, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
That works indeed, thanks! I can start editing at once with German, then. And for Spanish as soon as the Spanish pages are moved to the Xenharmonico wiki. And then it will make much sense to create a separate Japanese xenwiki and move all the Japanese pages there, so this link system will work there, too. The Japanese pages, BTW, are all (or at least mostly) tagged with „jp“ so a list can be compiled easily. Hstraub (talk) 19:45, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
You are not supposed to craft the signature yourself. ~~~~ automatically gives the name, talk and time. ~~~ gives the name and talk only, while ~~~~~ only gives the time. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 18:33, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
Interesting, good to know, thanks! Hstraub (talk) 19:45, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Talk pages

MediaWiki's "Add Topic" feature bottom-posts by default, which is bad because I have the "Wikispaces Archive" section at the bottom thinking that new things would be top-posted. As a result, new topics are auto-added into the archive section. Another regex should be good for this - Mike Battaglia (talk) 05:38, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Works now, although there are some redirects that may not have moved properly. These will need to be changed if anyone sees them. Mike Battaglia (talk) 18:47, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

MinervaNeue Mobile Skin Sidebar

Minerva Neue is the Mobile Skin, but it has a few bugs - no recent changes in the sidebar, no way to change a Page's protected status (I think?), etc. Changing MobileSettings.php to add a per-user mobile skin setting (I think this is possible?) would let a user change their mobile skin to Timeless, which is one workaround Mike Battaglia (talk) 14:41, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

One simple change I made is to enable the "Responsive" mode of the Vector skin, which is the default enabled MediaWiki skin on desktop. This leaves desktop the same, and also leaves mobile the same, but if you ever go to "Desktop mode" on mobile, it looks nicer. This makes it easier to do stuff on mobile that MinervaNeue can't do -- see below for more details - Mike Battaglia (talk) 18:42, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
nicer is subjective... PiotrGrochowski (talk) 18:44, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Shotgun Banhammer Setting Too Wide

Not sure if a PEBCAK, or wiki software issue, but:

Mike Battaglia blocked me for one day, mistaking me for User:PiotrGrochowski's sockpuppet.

I'm SO not that guy. I think the confusion is I created an account right around the time User:PiotrGrochowski was yelling at Kite.

I like Kite, and we've exchanged emails and chatted.

The notice said that my IP is blocked on the xen wiki, for "cursing at a member." I've never done that.

I've done nothing but useful edits on there. No beef at all.

Says it's because I have the same IP as User:PiotrGrochowski, which is impossible. I have no idea who that is.

the IP it claims I have is 172.17.0.1, which is a router IP, not a public IP. Anyone can have the router IP of 172.17.0.1. In fact, it was probably showing MIKE'S local IP as that. lol.

(I don't hide at all. I'm Michael Feen on Facebook, Michael W. Dean in the world, and I'm the guy from BipTunia music and maker of xen VSTs)

Can confirm. Mike, did you do a second ban? Or was it an auto-ban triggered by the sameness of IP address? Xenjacob (talk) 07:33, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Confirmed. MediaWiki is grabbing the wrong IP address. I modified the block just now to remove the IP, so you should be good now. I will look into a fix for IP blocking. Tyler (talk) 08:28, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Sounds good - I've moved this to the top for priority Mike Battaglia (talk) 17:32, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Mathematical formulae are not rendered correctly in mobile view

The rendering of mathematical formulae apparently works correctly in the desktop view but not in the mobile view. See the example at the bottom of Vals_and_Tuning_Space . Hstraub (talk) 20:17, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

Note that we need to change the plugin... Mike Battaglia (talk) 19:21, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Re-add organizers

Organizers need to be put back from the old Wiki. We're working on this now as people sign up, but wanted to make a note of it. Mike Battaglia (talk) 06:51, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
UPDATE - at this point, everyone is back except Ryan and "Cenobyte". I'll leave this for a little longer but will probably move to finished soon... Mike Battaglia (talk) 15:04, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Calculators/JavaScript is broken

Pages like Just Intonation -- EDO calculator render catastrophically incorrectly. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 15:56, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Hi PetrPiotr - yes, unfortunately MediaWiki doesn't support JavaScript. There are three or four "calculator" pages that have broken as a result. We may be able to add some of this back in using Templates, but for now, this is unfortunately one of the (few) things that Wikispaces was able to do that MediaWiki doesn't support. Mike Battaglia (talk) 16:31, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Why did you misspell my name, ... MiekMike? PiotrGrochowski (talk)
Oops - was talking to someone named "Petr" on Facebook at the same time, and I got my Petr's and my Piotr's mixed up... :) Mike Battaglia (talk) 16:51, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
The talk page has a link for a webpage that almost works, but fails when numbers are entered. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 18:41, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
If someone wants to create a version of this that works as a standalone page, maybe we can host it and then link to it from the wiki. Tyler (talk) 13:34, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
@Piotr - Yeah, this is because there's no JavaScript, since MediaWiki is HTML only. I think this "Widgets" plugin is what we will need. I'm not sure if Templates will also work, but maybe. Mike Battaglia (talk) 16:00, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Did you see that webpage in Talk:Just Intonation -- EDO calculator with the "almost working" behavior? That's a copy of the HTML code given. PiotrGrochowski (talk) 16:06, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

The thing you are calling "FREEZE" was just from before we imported - now it's only the MediaWiki engine. We may be able to do some JavaScript things -- on the list of things to do Mike Battaglia (talk) 16:08, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Backup Purdal calculator

Purdal calculator cannot be backed up easily, because it requires to be logged in and joined. While it is possible to do so in browser, backup services will not see the logged in data. Trying to save the page results in it not working properly, similarly to the "almost working" page at Talk:Just Intonation -- EDO calculator. What to do?! PiotrGrochowski (talk) 16:43, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Error
I think the Purdal calculator was broken on Wikispaces too, right? We may just have to make a new one, it seems pretty easy to do. Mike Battaglia (talk) 17:12, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Upload authors

The person who originally loaded up a file in wikispaces is missing on the file uploaded to the MediaWiki wiki. Can this information be added? (Xenwolf)

I left this info in the comments page for each file. Can you show a page that has it missing? Also, you can sign these with ~~~~ - Mike Battaglia (talk) 20:10, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Sorry that I forgot to sign.
Ah, I see, maybe I only overlooked it. I don't remember the file, but I do remember that I searched for it. Let's see if I can find it again (maybe if was only by the Random page function) ... --Xenwolf (talk) 13:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Pages that get replaced by a blank page

This bug seems to have started manifesting in the last 3(?) months, in which certain pages randomly disappear for long intervals, being replaced by a blank page having no HTML code. This currently includes the EDO page and some specific EDO pages (currently 34EDO), as well as many rational intervals (including 3/2), and the Gallery of projective tuning space images. I have so far found this to occur both on my 2011 iMac at home (I know, I need a new computer) with Firefox 115.7.0ESR, Safari 13.1.2 (13609.3.5.1.5), and Google Chrome (whatever the latest version supported with High Sierra is); on a 2021 iMac running MacOS Monterey with whatever the latest version of Safari is for that, and a PC (2017(?)-vintage) running Windows 10 with latest or nearly latest versions of Chrome, Edge, and Firefox (not ESR). Both of the latter computers had never seen the Xenharmonic Wiki before, as had Chrome and Safari on my home 2011 iMac. Clearing cache does not change the problem. So far, it has NOT happened on my iPhone 14 under Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, although the problem might occur with more extensive testing. On the computers on which the problem occurs, it occurs on the same pages (at least if tested within a short time of each other).

I have found a couple of partial workarounds, plus another so newly discovered that I don't know yet whether it is partial. The first workaround is to access a disappeared page from a Redirect, such as looking up 3/2 as "perfect fifth". Of course, not all pages have a redirect that is known to me. The second workaround is to manually alter the URL for a page to show the History page, such as https://en.xen.wiki/index.php?title=34edo?action=history and then clock on the most recent entry -- this usually works, but in some cases the History page itself becomes a blank page. At long intervals, a page will reappear (this has happened with the EDO page and several specific EDO pages), but sometimes it will disappear again (which happened with the EDO page). The third, which I could not test until early morning of 2024-02-12, is to be logged in (I just got this account); I also tested a set disappearing pages after logging out, and they start disappearing again; it is too early to say whether being logged in actually completely suppresses the problem.

Lucius Chiaraviglio (talk) 07:56, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Don't know how to do an actual proper fix, but I have noticed that issue is often fixed for whatever reason by appending a URL query string (?<whatever text>) to the URL, even if it does not actually have a function (like just putting some gibberish after the question mark).

CompactStar (talk) 08:07, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

As far as I know, it's a problem with the server cache, and the server admin is currently looking into a more permanent solution. In the meantime, you can try clearing a page's cache manually by going to Special:Purge and typing in the name of the page that doesn't load properly. --Fredg999 (talk) 02:25, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Should have been fixed now. FloraC (talk) 08:01, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Visual editing not available for Discussion articles

Visual editing seems to be not available for Discussion articles. This is annoying when trying to copy and paste a piece of a table from an article into a Discussion article, and presumably would be even more of a problem when trying to copy a spreadsheet into a table in a Discussion article. Lucius Chiaraviglio (talk) 06:32, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

This is more of a feature request than a bug, seeing as Wikipedia doesn't allow the visual editor in the discussion (talk) namespace, and it seems to be the default configuration for MediaWiki. Unsurprisingly, I have never experimented with the visual editor on a talk page, so I don't know whether it would work well there, with the standard format for talk pages and whatnot. In any case, as a workaround, you can temporarily use the source editor (with the "Edit source" button) to copy a table from a given page and paste it on a talk page. Similarly, you can paste a table from a spreadsheet into the visual editor into a user page or in the SandBox, then use the source editor on that page to copy the table's wikitext source into the talk page. It might not be as efficient as just using the visual editor in the talk namespace directly, but it's likely that that would cause other issues which might need just as much time to work around. --Fredg999 (talk) 06:40, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
