Merge with 3-limit
I wonder if this page should be merged with 3-limit? I think it would be sufficient to have "Pythagorean tuning" redirect to "3-limit", but I'd rather hear others' opinions before proceeding, in case a better suggestion comes up. Fredg999 (talk) 14:49, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- Honestly, I think it would be wise to keep the two pages separate if for no other reason than to distinguish 3-prime-limit (which is what Pythagorean tuning is) from 3-odd-limit while using the 3-limit page itself as a disambiguation page. Apart from that, I see no reason not to merge in favor of this page. --Aura (talk) 20:06, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- There is already a separate page for the 3-odd-limit. We might want to facilitate the navigation between pages p-limit and p-odd-limit, but other than that, the distinction is clear in most cases. Fredg999 (talk) 20:56, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ah. That makes sense. Still, I think that the merger between the 3-limit and Pythagorean tuning pages needs to be in favor of the latter due to the latter term being much better known outside of Xenharmony. --Aura (talk) 21:58, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
I think we need to add more historical contexts to this article if we are to keep it separate from 3-limit. FloraC (talk) 09:49, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
I would personally go for merging 3-limit into this page and redirecting. Lériendil (talk) 03:10, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- I support the merge, tho I'm still not sure which of the two should be the main. They're not exactly synonymous, as Pythagorean mostly refers to the historical and common practice of generating scales by stacking pure fifths, while 3-limit is just the generic 2-3 lattice. Viewed as such, Pythagorean is contained within 3-limit, but I still believe Pythagorean (despite being a misnomer as some people point out) is more important, both conceptually and historically.
- I believe that if Pythagorean becomes the primary page, then for consistency, "2-limit" should be merged into "1edo", and the other way around for if "3-limit" becomes the primary page. --VectorGraphics (talk) 17:08, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
I support the merge. I support replacing "pythagorean" with "3-limit" throughout the xenwiki, except for a few brief mentions, such as "3-limit (aka pythagorean) just intonation...", or when discussing historical terminology. --TallKite (talk) 21:04, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
