Huh?

I expected span to be mainly this Wikipedia: Linear span. Why does the logarithmic interval size needs to take such a term? Who uses the term this way? FloraC (talk) 11:47, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

I use the term this way, and so do plenty of pages on this wiki from people like Gene and etc. Note the usage of span on https://en.xen.wiki/w/Generator_complexity, https://en.xen.wiki/w/Harmonic, https://en.xen.wiki/w/Hypopent, and many others, all referring to the span of an interval in this way. If you want to add additional meanings feel free; I added a note that it's also used to refer to the span of a set of vectors. Mike Battaglia (talk) 12:41, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

I was surprised when I saw this too, reconnecting to the internet after a long flight yesterday, because while I was on the plane I had taken a note to self to eventually add an article to the wiki about linear span, in order to extract some of the preliminaries I needed to cover in my recent article on linear dependence in RTT. So I will probably do that soon, and I'll make sure it gets along with this page well when I do.

I also wasn't familiar with this usage. But I could have used it five minutes ago when I was writing a comment on a page of Aura's. So I'll add it to my toolbelt, too. Thanks for writing this Mike. --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 13:22, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I am not familiar with English mathematics terminology, Fifthspan is an example counting "spans", not measuring the size of span. You know, "multiple-span bridge" has one or more pier and spans the river bank and the pier, and spans further. They are easy to distinguish in writing; the span of 9/8 is 203.9 cents, and ~9/8 is +2 span of ~3/2. (This is an example of duality between tuning space and interval space?) (Maybe fifthspan doesn't mean fifth-size span. Linear span...? If so, why do we need to define the linear subspace of rank-2 temperament, its dimension is already reduced? Or does "span" always mean "use this set of vectors as the basis?") --Dummy index (talk) 15:13, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Ah, span (v.) and subtend (v.) are used interchangeably on Constant structure, and Glossary #S, fifthspan may be "The number of fifths an interval subtends" (as one action of spanning). --Dummy index (talk) 13:49, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
