Confusion about rank of a gene

"The dimension or rank of a gene is simply its rank as a temperament (which is one less than the rank of the subgroup is being tempered from)"

I don't understand the part in parentheses here. Why is it one less? —Keenan Pepper (talk) 21:14, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

Because it tempers out one comma? FloraC (talk) 07:10, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Oops, cruft from an earlier revision where I was only looking at codimension-1 genes. Edited Mike Battaglia (talk) 03:52, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

"Gene" vs step of 311?

Isn't "gene" already taken as a step of 311edo? P.S. Honestly I'd rather it be removed from 311edo than from here. -- VectorGraphics (talk) 00:16, 28 June 2025 (UTC)

Yeah I think this is a rare case where the name is appropriate and the concept is novel enough to deserve a name. – Sintel🎏 (talk) 00:43, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
Oh and by the way this idea is actually in use in my temperament finder right now, though I ended up just calling them families because gene isn't really a widely recognized term (I think?) – Sintel🎏 (talk)
I don't think these are similar enough types of concepts as to cause conflicts. FloraC (talk) 16:46, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
