D

Plenty of pages where 1/1 is set to be D. I'm so used to 1/1 being C, 9/8 being D, 5/4 being E, etc. so much that the D scales look very out of sync. And they really are out of sync with solfege columns, which start with "do" which is C. What to do?! PiotrGrochowski (talk) 16:11, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Dead Links

I've noticed that there's many links around the wiki that seems to have been lost to the world, especially Yahoo group links, so I'd just like to ask what we're going to do with most of the dead links --CritDeathX (talk) 21:24, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

There are many ways to deal with it, my (currently) preferred ones: try to find the contents searching for the title (being hopefully not just "here") and replace the link or (if you know how) find it by the URL in the Wayback Machine. You may also help others to deal with it by marking it as such: add {{dead link}} to make the pages appear on Category:Pages containing dead links. Thanks --Xenwolf (talk) 11:28, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Naming

(Not sure where to post this so I'm putting it here)

Currently, the process for naming commas/intervals/temperaments seems to be that the person who "discovers" it gets to name it. Now this might have historically been fine, but consider that nowadays, I can just run a Python script overnight and come up with literally *millions* of commas and temperaments not yet named on the wiki. Do I get to name them all?

Maybe there should be a more democratic process for naming things. On Talk:1729/1728 we are currently just having a poll, which seems good enough! But I suggest that if you want to name something, you first post the proposed name on the talk page (with your reasoning) and then once a consensus is reached the article can be updated.

This seems reasonable enough to me. If a comma/interval/temperament name is established elsewhere by multiple people other than yourself, I suppose you couldn't be faulted for adding the name to the wiki as a fact. But if you're just making it up yourself on the spot, a more considerate thing to do would be to solicit input from the community.

My sense is that our culture leans toward collective ownership of these ideas, and that the majority of contributors here do not believe that the first person to describe the value of a given comma/interval/temperament thereby has earned an exclusive right to name it.

I also see that many of us recognize how the proliferation of somewhat crazy comma/interval/temperament names has negatively impacted us. I am not innocent of contributing to this problem myself (sorry about that).

I note that some systematic comma/interval/temperament naming schemes exist, such as the one for color notation or for Sagittal, and so to large extent every one of them does already have at least one name. The goals of such systems may include obviating the need for individually naming these commas/intervals/temperaments. But I don't think it's realistic to expect that we'll achieve the threshold of buy-in to any one of these systems, so we'll always need the non-systematic names. And so every comma/interval/temperament is going to end up with multiple names. So it goes.

I think you could add your proposed name to the main page, so long as you disclaim it as merely your proposal, not as established fact. Then it would be good to also start discussion on the corresponding Talk page as Sintel suggests. The ultimate goal would be working toward establishing a name as fact, whether by something close to democracy, or at least by something close to oligarchy. --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 16:32, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
