Xenharmonic Wiki talk:Introduction

My little two cents about this page is I don't think General theory is a good place to start learning. Guides is the page we wanna lead beginners to, and I think Xen concepts for beginners belongs to that page (rather than this page). —FloraC (talk) 12:15, 24 September 2026 (UTC)

I added a link to Xen concepts for beginners on the Guides page. Since General theory already links to Xen concepts for beginners in the lead section, it might be reasonable to keep this page as is. In particular, Xen concepts for beginners does not link back to General theory, so we might want to change that if we're going to link directly to Xen concepts for beginners instead, to facilitate navigation. --Fredg999 (talk) 21:30, 24 September 2026 (UTC)

Currently I think a lot of the guides linked to on the “Guides” page are less useful than the beginner pages linked from “General theory”. Xen for beginners and Nick’s guide are great, but the rest are either outdated (especially the how to/software ones) or dense with university level math that a music theorist or musician will be discouraged by (especially the ‘X’s guide/lectures on RTT’ type ones). If I were a complete beginner and I read everything linked in General theory, I would walk away with a much better understanding, compared to if I read everything linked in Guides. But, I think those first two, Xen for beginners and Nick’s guide, are excellent and reading those first would make everything in General theory easier to understand.

Given all that, I think we should keep the Introduction page (this page) exactly the same as it is now. Not adding or removing anything, just keeping the link to General theory as-is. But at the top of General theory (not here) we should add links to Xen for beginners and Nick’s guide. Thoughts?

It seems good enough for now with your recent edits. Ideally we would have an actual community guide that isn't just a single person's pet project (or more accurately a handful of those), but I suppose it gives reader more choices. On the other hand, guides are inherently not quite neutral, so maybe it's best if General theory stays as a neutral "knowledge tree" kind of page, while guides are provided to the readers with more personal backgrounds and specialized perspectives tied to various approaches to xen. We might end up needing to link to both General theory and Guides, and if the guides are better organized later, then we won't need to highlight the "good ones", since the guides page will do a better job of sorting them in the first place. --Fredg999 (talk) 03:21, 25 September 2026 (UTC)
