Expectations

"As one might expect, 12edo is about as accurate as it can be." Why might one expect this? --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 22:33, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Because it's a fact? FloraC (talk) 04:02, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
What I meant was: I don't already understand this fact. Perhaps for "one" it might be self-evident, but I (and perhaps others) fall outside the scope of this "one". Is there some way to demonstrate or explain this connection between 12edo and ripple? --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 14:42, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
So we've decomposed the comma as "equates a stack of four 10/9's with 8/5". For perhaps an average RTT user, it's hard enough to name any other edo that satisfies that, not to mention being a better 5-limit tuning. FloraC (talk) 05:03, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Beginner question

Just wondering why the generator for ripple is around 100 cents when the two intervals it equates are around 200 cents and 800 cents. I would think the generator would be more like 200 cents, because that's all you'd need to generate a set of pitches which demonstrate the comma. Am I misunderstanding something? --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 22:37, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Notice that 2/1, 10/9 and 8/5 only span 2.9.5, where a 200 cent generator does work. In 2.3.5, however, the generator must be split to give you the harmonic 3. FloraC (talk) 04:02, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for this! That makes sense, and gives me some interesting further questions to look into. --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 15:12, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
