Hi Fredg999, what are your criteria for changes like this to the order of categorization lines? As I see, it's ordered neither alphabetically nor by specificity. In the summary, you don't elaborate on the background of the change, maybe you found something I've been looking for in vain for a long time? Please share your conclusions. --Xenwolf (talk) 06:30, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

: This edit, like similar ones before or after it, was mainly aimed at two things: moving the page from :Category:Tempered scale (now deleted) to :Category:Tempered scales and from :Category:Step-Nested Scales to :Category:Step-nested scales (merging WIP). As you have probably noticed, I've been recategorizing a bunch of scale pages lately, and so I try to be somewhat consistent with the order of categories.
: Here is what I usually aim for so far. I start by the scale size, since every scale has that. Then, I specify if it's tempered or JI, since most scales are either one or the other, although "mixed" scales including a combination of tempered and JI intervals could exist as well. For tempered scales, I specify the tuning and the temperament (it could have been in the reverse order, but I went with that for now); for JI scales, I noticed that some scales (especially LCJI) specified the prime limit, but I haven't been systematically categorizing JI scales by limit yet, especially since the limit categories aren't so clear as to what they should contain. Also, some scales exist within a family, of which :Category:Step-nested scales is one example, so I include that category at this point. I keep :Category:Pages with Scala files for the very end, since it's mostly a "meta-category" to my sense (it's more about form than content). Overall, you could say it's a mix of "adjective order rules" and specificity ordering, if that makes sense (e.g. "this is a 12-note tempered scale, and more specifically a step-nested scale").
: Since there are no category-related conventions so far, to my knowledge, I tried to get this as coherent as possible by looking at the existing stuff, but it's still a work in progress. For instance, I don't know much about step-nested scales, but if it turns out that they are always tempered, then that could become a subcategory of tempered scales. But then I like the idea of having every tempered scales categorized straight in :Category:Tempered scales as well anyway, since I think that conveys the information more clearly, although that's certainly debatable. Also, some scales are described as "haplotonic", "albitonic" or "chromatic" with relation to chromatic pairs, and I'm not sure yet how to treat these categories, so I usually stash them near the end when I don't just forget about them at all.
: Anyway, I'm willing to discuss about this sort of conventions, so if you have anything to pitch in, I'd like to hear your point of view. --Fredg999 (talk) 18:35, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
