Etymology

It is named after NCBI taxa #416405 - the red palm mite. The red palm mite is invasive in the Americas. Entomologist Ronald Ochoa said of the arrival of the red palm mite: "this invasion represents the biggest mite explosion ever observed in the Americas". This imagery of devious little mites hiding in the fronds of a palm tree being shipped across the world inspired the name "darkfrond".
