Rename proposal

I'll repost this here as well.

I propose the deprecation of "nicetone" as a name for 3L 2m 2s on these grounds:

  1. The name is presumably an opposite of meantone because the zarlino intense diatonic (which is an example of 3L 2m 2s) distinguishes the syntonic comma. However, not all nicetone scale patterns are reasonable approximations of zarlino, even if we restrict to the specific arrangements of LmLsmLs and LmLsLms.
  2. "Mean" in the context of "meantone" refers to "average" not "nasty", thus the correct opposite of meantone is something like "fartone".
  3. Meantone is a temperament, while nicetone is a ternary scale pattern. Nicetone, if anything, makes more sense to be a rank-3 temperament modeling ptolemaic diatonic (if such a thing can exist) rather than ptolemaic diatonic itself. The current usage of nicetone is analogous to calling 5L 2s "meantone" (not meantone[7], just meantone).
  4. We have other names already (Zarlino pattern, Ptolemaic diatonic, or simply just 3L 2m 2s).
  5. In contrast to nicetone, most other ternary scale patterns have names derived from hybrids of MOS names, such as diasem (diatonic + semaphore).
