I've got the red link set up, just what IS one of these?!
I'm confused by it a lot, and it shows up often on high-numbered EDO pages.

This is the way, wikis work: you can add new (potential) pages during writing in one page using a specific syntax for internal pages by enclosing terms within double brackets . But maybe I misunderstand your question. It's not a bad thing to have links to pages that don't exist: it gives the opportunity to the reader to become a writer if he/she knows something about the topic.

Maybe the links should better appear in a different colour...

Meanwhile, just what *is*, say 270&87 temperament?

there's a small mention of it on the page "optimal patent val". basically, a&b means you take the vals (mappings) from a-ET and B-ET and use them to define a rank-2 temperament. (or a&b&c for rank-3, etc.)
try it out here: http://x31eq.com/temper/net.html

oops, guess i hit the post button twice :) anyway, note that you may see this notation used with "warts" (see pages "Vals" and "Keenan's explanation of vals"). for instance, 7&12 is meantone, but 7c&12 is Helmholtz...
