The shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown flute tuned to a pentatonic minor scale, but capable of a great amount of pitch bending in the hands of a skilled player. Techniques for getting pitches other than those provided directly by the finger holes include cross-fingering, partial covering of holes, and adjustment of embouchure.
