I have a question about the numbers. They refer to STEPS, right? It seems intuitive, but I may be wrong. So 22221 would be (from a given 0) 2 steps away, 2, , , and then 1 right?

Yes, the numbers sand for steps, between notes, and yes, 0 is included.
