The Istrian scale is a hexatonic scale often used in the folk music of Istria and Kvarner, Croatia.
The tuning of the scale is usually just or close to just, being a 6-tone subset of 7ifdo (of notes 7 to 14 of the subharmonic series).
Melodically, the shape of the scale loosely resembles the first 6 tones of ‘the octatonic scale’ of Western European music. It also resembles what Western musicians might call "Phrygian b4 b5 b6". However, given that the actual Istrian scale is unequally-tuned, these 12-tone-based melodic shapes are approximate only and do not fully capture the nature of the scale.
