Template:MOS intro/doc
Parameters
Parameters | Required | Description |
---|---|---|
Scale Signature | Yes (optional on mos pages) | The mos's scale signature in the form "xL ys", or for non-octave mosses, "xL ys<p/q>", "xL ys⟨p/q⟩", or "xL ys (p/q-equivalent)". If left blank and used on a mos page, then the page's title will be used. |
Usage
The typical use of this template is for the introduction of a mos's page.
{{MOS intro}}
Using a different scale signature
If desired, a different scale signature can be entered as shown below.
{{MOS intro|Scale Signature = 5L 2s}}
5L 2s, named diatonic in TAMNAMS, is a 2/1-equivalent (octave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 5 large steps and 2 small steps, repeating every octave. Generators that produce this scale range from 685.7 ¢ to 720 ¢, or from 480 ¢ to 514.3 ¢.
Adding mos names
Mosses that are named under TAMNAMS will have their names automatically included, with the exception of equave-agnostic TAMNAMS names. To specify other names, enter them as a semicolon-delimited list as shown below. It's recommended to use only the mos's most commonly used names.
{{MOS intro|Scale Signature=7L 4s|Other Names=daemotonic; suprasmitonic}}
7L 4s, also called daemotonic or suprasmitonic, is a 2/1-equivalent (octave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 7 large steps and 4 small steps, repeating every octave. 7L 4s is a child scale of 4L 3s, expanding it by 4 tones. Generators that produce this scale range from 327.3 ¢ to 342.9 ¢, or from 857.1 ¢ to 872.7 ¢.
Examples
The intro text will change depending on the step count, whether it has more than one period, and what its equivalence interval (or equave) is.
Equave | Periods | Intro text |
---|---|---|
Octave | 1 | 1L 6s, named onyx in TAMNAMS, is a 2/1-equivalent (octave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 1 large step and 6 small steps, repeating every octave. Generators that produce this scale range from 1028.6 ¢ to 1200 ¢, or from 0 ¢ to 171.4 ¢.
6L 1s, named archaeotonic in TAMNAMS, is a 2/1-equivalent (octave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 6 large steps and 1 small step, repeating every octave. Generators that produce this scale range from 171.4 ¢ to 200 ¢, or from 1000 ¢ to 1028.6 ¢. Scales of this form are always proper because there is only one small step. |
2 | 6L 4s, named lemon in TAMNAMS, is a 2/1-equivalent (octave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 6 large steps and 4 small steps, with a period of 3 large steps and 2 small steps that repeats every 600.0 ¢, or twice every octave. Generators that produce this scale range from 360 ¢ to 400 ¢, or from 200 ¢ to 240 ¢. | |
3 or more | 3L 3s, named triwood in TAMNAMS, is a 2/1-equivalent (octave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 3 large steps and 3 small steps, with a period of 1 large step and 1 small step that repeats every 400.0 ¢, or 3 times every octave. Generators that produce this scale range from 200 ¢ to 400 ¢, or from 0 ¢ to 200 ¢. Scales of the true MOS form, where every period is the same, are proper because there is only one small step per period. | |
Non-octave | 1 | 1L 8s⟨3/1⟩ is a 3/1-equivalent (tritave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 1 large step and 8 small steps, repeating every interval of 3/1 (1902.0 ¢). Generators that produce this scale range from 1690.6 ¢ to 1902 ¢, or from 0 ¢ to 211.3 ¢.
8L 1s⟨3/1⟩ is a 3/1-equivalent (tritave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 8 large steps and 1 small step, repeating every interval of 3/1 (1902.0 ¢). Generators that produce this scale range from 211.3 ¢ to 237.7 ¢, or from 1664.2 ¢ to 1690.6 ¢. Scales of this form are always proper because there is only one small step. |
2 | 6L 4s⟨3/1⟩ is a 3/1-equivalent (tritave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 6 large steps and 4 small steps, with a period of 3 large steps and 2 small steps that repeats every 951.0 ¢, or twice every interval of 3/1 (1902.0 ¢). Generators that produce this scale range from 570.6 ¢ to 634 ¢, or from 317 ¢ to 380.4 ¢. | |
3 or more | 3L 3s⟨3/1⟩ is a 3/1-equivalent (tritave-equivalent) moment of symmetry scale containing 3 large steps and 3 small steps, with a period of 1 large step and 1 small step that repeats every 634.0 ¢, or 3 times every interval of 3/1 (1902.0 ¢). Generators that produce this scale range from 317 ¢ to 634 ¢, or from 0 ¢ to 317 ¢. Scales of the true MOS form, where every period is the same, are proper because there is only one small step per period. |
Limitations
The name of the mos is currently limited to its scale signature. There is currently no support for using different names, such as TAMNAMS names.
