Circle diagram of the 5-9-11-13 by 3/2 bihexany, an octave-repeating just intonation scale.

A circle diagram (or scale circle) is a diagram that shows the pitches of a periodic scale on a circle. It is similar to (but not the same as) the horogram, a type of diagram mad by Erv Wilson.

Conventions

  • Unless specified otherwise, a full turn is assumed to represent an octave, such that 1 ¢ corresponds to 0.3°.
  • The tonic (and thus the period) of the scale is generally placed at the top.
  • Rotating clockwise corresponds to going up in pitch, and vice versa.
