Ryan Pratt is a microtonal composer, music theorist, music educator and web tool developer.

He advocates for a ‘top-down’ model of harmony. In this model:

  • Intervals are understood through what fundamental they imply, rather than as fixed pitch points
  • Chord progressions work by re-contextualizing natural harmonics as partials of lower fundamentals, a new implied fundamental is a new chord

Some of his compositions include Sadhana (2015) written using 48edo ‘eighth-tone’ notation, and K. tracing (2015) which uses an empirical tuning derived from the partials of a real violin.
