Margo Schulter is a scholar and composer who has specialized in medieval concepts (both in the west and in the Islamic world) and voice leading practices, locating unexplored potential in historical practice for her new work. Her compositions are in a style which she calls neo-medieval or neo-gothic, and which might be called a kind of historical fiction, imagining a music that could have happened in 1300 or 1400 had history taken a slightly different course in the generations after Perotin or Machault. In terms of tuning, she has been an advocate for temperaments featuring a slightly sharp fifth in what she calls the gentle region, often leaving 5 out of the picture.
