cleanup

I think the UDP page we did should serve as a model for lots of different pages, especially ones we collaborate on together. Compared to that one, this one seems like a mess. The math section seems good enough, I changed a few minutia but nothing major. But do we really need the "jazz" section or the huge example with porcupine? They're hangovers from my original article written a year ago, and I think they ought to be shortened a bit.

My preference is for that sort of tighter writing. However, I am reluctant to remove too much of what someone else has done, for fear they will become upset and feel I've removed too much of value.

OK, I got rid of a whole bunch of crap that was just a hangover from an extremely early revision of this article. I also tweaked the example section in a way I thought made it slightly more clear, but other than that I left all the math alone. Feel free to change anything back if you don't like it.
