BIRCH, the Binary Interval Region Classification Hscheme, utilizes prefixes with rigid definitions to specify any interval size to a given degree of accuracy.
50-cent quarter tones are used as the base step size to be subdivided in this system, as follows, where k is the neutral or perfect interval size in 24edo:
Level 1:
| Size | Prefix | Example size | Example name |
|---|---|---|---|
| k-100 | infra- | 250 | infrathird |
| k-50 | minor | 300 | minor third |
| k | neutral | 350 | neutral third |
| k+50 | major | 400 | major third |
| k+100 | ultra- | 450 | ultrathird |
