Macrodiatonic and microdiatonic scales

Macrodiatonic scales are nonoctave scales that have a similar structure to the diatonic scale (usually having 5 large and 2 small steps) but are stretched because of their nonoctave period. The equivalent term for compressed diatonic scales is microdiatonic. Macrodiatonic microdiatonic scales sound completely unrecognizable but they have a similar structure very similar to diatonic (with it being possible to translate from diatonic to macrodiatonic/microdiatonic scales "on the fly"). Temperaments assosciated with macrodiatonic/microdiatonic scales are usually termed as macromeantone/micromeantones.

Examples of macrodiatonic and microdiatonic scales

  • 5L 2s<3/1>: Generator is approximately 17/9. This scale is connected to the no-twos macromeantone temperament in the 3.13.7 subgroup.
