Reference tone

A reference tone is an agreed-upon fundamental or dominant frequency that musical instruments will reference when adjusting tuning.

In 12-EDO, this is usually ISO 16: A4 = 440 Hz[1].

In xenharmonic music, since there is no universally accepted notation covering all tuning systems, simply stating A4 = 440 Hz is not specific enough.
