defining intro for newbies

A defining intro for newbies should be suitable for newbies. It should first describe the topic in a simple language without using other (mostly unfamiliar) definitions. From a mathematical point of view, maybe this introduces redundancies, but in common sense this is nessesary to make this wiki readable - on a page-by-page basis.
