eliminating the second paragraph
Meaning of last sentence
I just edited the second paragraph here, which is like a little mini-tutorial on how to read mapping matrices that I believe Igs wrote, but I think it's out of place now that we have the General Theory pages and the non-mathematical Vals page. It's not that I don't appreciate what Igs was trying to do, but that paragraph definitely clutters up this page and would go better on the corresponding General Theory Vals page. Except I already have something similar on that page, so it's a bit redundant.

Any objections if I scrap it? I don't believe it's something Gene originally wrote.
"Note that the TE norm for this val is approximately 31." I don't understand what this sentence is trying to tell me about this fact. Is it a coincidence? What is the significance? Is this unexpected, or unusual? --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 22:12, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

: Any "good" (meaning: it tries to approximate the JI) val is expected to have the TE norm [complexity] close to its division of the octave. It is the complexity of the temperament and can be used to compute the TE relative error. FloraC (talk) 07:21, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

I don't find the way it is written to be very clear, but it isn't intended for me. If you remove it, make sure what remains still makes sense, of course.

:: Awesome, thanks for that, Flora. I looked for places where TE norm was discussed and I couldn't find that mentioned. So if you don't mind, I'll go ahead and add that note to the main page. Feel free to remove it or transplant it elsewhere if you prefer. --Cmloegcmluin (talk) 14:35, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Cleaned up
I saw that Pete Kosmorsky added a few things, some of which weren't technically accurate. I removed the inaccuracies but cleared up a point involving the way the word "generator" was used in the first paragraph that I feel makes it more consistent with the rest of the article.

What is a val?
(Please give a simple answer!)

The references to wikipedia help not very much.

We should have better a handful concise definitions from our point of view.

Thanks in advance for working on that!
