== Merge categories and deprecate this template? ==

I think that [[:Category:Index of temperaments]] and [[:Category:Temperaments]] should be merged. I'd prefer keeping the latter; categories usually don't start with "Index of...", because that's just what categories are: they're indexes of wiki pages.

Right now, both categories are used for the same purpose, but pages are placed in them in different ways: with a template in the first case, and normally ("by hand") in the second case. I'm not convinced by the design choice of using a template for the sole reason of placing pages in a single category. I understand that it acts as a shortcut, but it also means that Cat-a-lot cannot handle the category added by the template; I would need [[Special:ReplaceText|ReplaceText]] to do that, and that requires admin privileges. Of course, I could simply edit the IoT template as needed, but that wouldn't fix the problem I just mentioned, even though it would solve the category merging.

To summarize, I suggest replacing every occurrence of <code><nowiki>{{IoT}}</nowiki></code> with <code><nowiki>[[Category:Temperaments]]</nowiki></code>, using ReplaceText, and then deprecating this template. This would have to be done by an admin. Any thoughts? --[[User:Fredg999|Fredg999]] ([[User talk:Fredg999|talk]]) 21:21, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

: I decided to do the categorization via template to change the name of the category later. So take [[:Category:Temperaments]] as the “index of temperaments” and just change the category name within this template. But do whatever you think is right. --[[User:Xenwolf|Xenwolf]] ([[User talk:Xenwolf|talk]]) 22:37, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

:: I changed the target category for now. I'm still unconvinced by the usage of this template, though. I don't think we'll have to move this category so often, and if we do need to do so, then we can do it with Cat-a-lot very easily. --[[User:Fredg999|Fredg999]] ([[User talk:Fredg999|talk]]) 23:10, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

::: The template was introduced when the recategorization tool was not yet available, so its value is no longer present. It should also be a performance issue: direct categorization should be cheaper. That's why it should be deprecated. --[[User:Xenwolf|Xenwolf]] ([[User talk:Xenwolf|talk]]) 07:18, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

::: I will make the mass changes soon (and turn into a "bot" for this). --[[User:Xenwolf|Xenwolf]] ([[User talk:Xenwolf|talk]]) 11:01, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

:::: As it turned out, [[Special:ReplaceText]] seems kind of broken in this wiki, it produces SQL syntax errors. So one option would be to do it by hand (it's [https://en.xen.wiki/index.php?title=Special%3AWhatLinksHere&limit=500&hideredirs=1&hidelinks=1&target=Template%3AIoT&namespace=0 this list that provides direct ''edit'' links]). We could deprecate it first and make this obvious to people who use the preview function (BTW: the access key is '''p'''). --[[User:Xenwolf|Xenwolf]] ([[User talk:Xenwolf|talk]]) 19:46, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

::::: The replacement is now done. @Fredg999 Would you please do the deprecation part? Thanks in advance. --[[User:Xenwolf|Xenwolf]] ([[User talk:Xenwolf|talk]]) 21:38, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

:::::: The deprecation part is done. Please let me know if there is anything else we should do here. --[[User:Fredg999|Fredg999]] ([[User talk:Fredg999|talk]]) 03:53, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

::::::: Maybe this template and talk page should be deleted as well? @Fredg999 do you see anything that would argue against that? --[[User:Xenwolf|Xenwolf]] ([[User talk:Xenwolf|talk]]) 16:10, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
